Three Calculations, One Page
Discount, tip, and splitting a bill between friends are three separate calculations that almost always happen together in real life — at a restaurant, on a group order, or with a coupon in hand. Instead of switching between three different tools, this one does all three at once: enter the bill, an optional discount, a tip percentage, and how many people are splitting it.
The Formula
Worked Example
An $86.50 bill, no discount, 18% tip, split 2 ways: tip = $86.50 × 18% = $15.57. Total = $86.50 + $15.57 = $102.07 (a cent of rounding aside), split two ways = about $51 per person. Add a 10% discount to the same bill and the discount ($8.65) comes off before the tip is added on top, since the tip is calculated on the original amount.
Why Tip Is Calculated Before the Discount
This calculator applies the tip to the original bill amount, not the discounted one — a common etiquette recommendation, since a coupon, promotion, or loyalty discount is an arrangement between you and the business, and shouldn't reduce what the server actually receives for the service provided.
